Does Jeann Claude Van Damn do Martial Arts?

I have heard that he never did any real Martial Arts and that he was a dancer which is why he is so flexible. And also no karate teacher have ever claimed to have taught him. So does anyone know for a fact that he does any Martial Arts at all? or does he just say he can fight because he can throw his legs around?

Does Jeann Claude Van Damn do Martial Arts?
He is a black belt in Shotokan Karate.
Reply:um have you seen the man in any of his movies???? trust me somewhere along the way he's had some kind of martial arts training... you dont fight like he does in his movies just by knowing how to dance...

this is only a portion of what it says but this is on the web in an autobiography about him

Born on Oct 18 1960, Jean-Claude Van Damme is the son of Eugene Van Varenberg and Eliana Van Varenberg. "The Muscles from Brussels" originally known as Jean-Claude Van Varenberg, started martial arts at the age of 11. His father Eugene Van Varenberg introduced him to martial arts when he saw his son was physically weak. Jean-Claude started with Shotokan Karate and later studied Kickboxing, Taekwon-Do, and Muay Thai. He won the European professional karate association's middleweight championship as a teenager, and also beat the 2nd best karate fighter in the world.
Reply:He is a former full-contact shotokan karate champion.

Not only he knows karate, but was able to apply it very well.
Reply:du-uh!
Reply:Yeah, he's a blackbelt. Obviously his first job is as an actor and not a competitive martial artist now, but in his early 80's movies, he was a much better martial artist than an actor and his popularity grew from there.
Reply:Yes.
Reply:His career started off as a dancer, he learned martial arts but is nothing special.
