How can I learn martial arts?

I really want to learn some sort of martial arts but I can't afford lessons or anything like that. I don't care about the belts either, just the experience.

Is there a DVD or something like that I could try that would actually work well?

How can I learn martial arts?
Unless, as suggested, you know someone that could teach you, I'm afraid DVDs won't be of much help. You wouldn't try to learn surgery like that, or how to fly an airplane. It doesn't work for martial arts either.

I am of the mentality that when there's a will, there's a way. You say you can't afford lessons right now. Are you sure? Is there something you could cut back on, or some way you could earn the extra income? Maybe you can only afford one lesson a week, or even arrange for a lesson every two weeks. It's better than nothing.

Or maybe you can find a school where they'll you train in exchange for certain services; like cleaning or doing some painting on the building, whatever you can do. It's a long shot, but you won't know unless you ask.

But the DVDs? You can always try, but I wouldn't bother. DVDs are for people with experience who want to use them as a reference for what they've already learned. They're next to useless for beginners.
Reply:I know that most dvd's can't teach what you learn from "fighting" with someone standing right in front of you. You can practice all you want, but it's a whole new ball game once someone's there. My suggestion is maybe trying a why. Usually they are free with membership.
Reply:the best thing is learn it by expert..there is no need to go to martial arts school...if you know someone ( a friend,a close friend) who is a martial artist (not so expert) try to convince him/her to teach you...
Reply:dvds dont help much sole form of learning. it may be good supplements but not your only way of learning.you gotta save money to get lessons. if you are young try to convience your parents how much it will help you:grades, discipline, fitness, confindence, self defense etc...or look for any free classes they may have:try rec centers, churches, boys and girls clubs etc...

here(in texas) you can find boxing or judo classes for about $20-$50 a month which in my opinion is pretty good(i pay $90/month for muay thai)
Reply:er.............

by yrself ?????

u cn ask me.

i am a black holder myself :]

thx for points
Reply:Its hard to learn from a DVD...im in md and we just had a new school open and they are very affordable...but u prolly dont live in MD so....try to go to a school and talk to the master they might be able to work something out for you...all the masters really want are dedicated students...
Reply:Type in something like "human weapon" on google videos or youtube. It would show you some demonstration on some of the martial arts moves.
Reply:only one way get an intructor alot of places have very low prices as long as you AVOID the dreaded mc, dojo

learning from a DVD does not teach you, if every stance i did was not correctedi odubt i could pass white belt testing honestly -.- you need someone to correct your mistakes and help you learn, plus its alot of fun having an instructor :)
Reply:finding a way to pay your dojo and instructor in return for learning martial arts is part of the process of learining. If you understand this you can see how martial arts is a way of life. Your first challenge and lesson would be to find time and money to do this. Most instructors will let you train if you explain to them that you have a desire to learn and you are willing to make up for it cleaning mats or whatever. They've probably done it themselves. Later when you have money repay them well for that kind of kindness.

Make sure you don't miss any classes if you ask for this kind of special treatment
