Should I take martial arts?

I was wondering if I should take martial arts or not. I feel that I want to do something to keep me occupied during times. My friends said it is a fun thing to do, but Im not sure. I worry that I am not good enough for it.

Should I take martial arts?
If you have to ask, then no you should not.
Reply:You never know if you don't try. Just don't sign a long term contract or anything and check it out for a few months.
Reply:I would recommend Jiu-Jitzu or tae-kwan do.
Reply:Sure, if that's what you want to do, go for it.
Reply:Look there is almost a martial arts for ever body type. So if your worried about size or something dont be. Just look into each style your considering more.

But if your worried about not liking it then just join for a little while, or ask the instructor if you can take 1 free class to try it out.

You will never know until you try so just give it a shot

And dont say your not good enough for it because almost everyone was bad when they first started. Everyone was a beginner at one point in time so dont worry about skill level and just do your best =)
Reply:"Your friends said it is a fun thing to do"? Most martial arts programs involve work. Dedication, discipline and practice. Long hours are spent doing not only push-ups, sit-ups and jumping jacks along with stretches, kicks, punches, drills etc...

If you aren't into working out, then I would suggest taking something less stressful.. Try it like most say for a class (Most schools offer a free class...) But remember to be a student of martial arts requires a lifetime..
Reply:Martial Arts training if taken seriously will keep you "occupied during times" Just remember that they are combat systems (all martial arts where develop for the purpose of self-defense) Fitness, Discipline, Spiritual Fortitude are by-products of Martial Arts training.

Be aware that they will be contact and risks. Evaluate your instructor not only in skill but in his ability to teach, specially patience and structure of the class. More importantly, know that it *is* an art and all Martial Arts are similar yet different, find the one that suits your personality the best. Because as an art it will be an expression of yourself.
Reply:marital arts is something which is very personal... it depends very much on what you want to do with learning of such an art...To protect oneself or to protect others, like womenfolk around you.

Personally, marital arts is a way of life;just ;like that of the samurai. it allows you not only to proctect yourself, it also let you help others and a great way of mediation; it all depends on what kind of marital arts you are intending to take up.

It depends on which way you are coming from. there are countless types of marital arts. it will also depends on your frame of mind...it is a fun way to keep fit, don worry too much about being not good enough for it. just learn from a reputable school, and enjoy the jounery.
Reply:Under the circumstances you mentioned, I think you should. You will be good at it if you start practicing. Martial arts is for all ages. Trust your friend, it is fun. You will have something to do to occupy you which is good for your health both physically and mentally. I am in martial arts from age 14 to till now, 44, off and on, depending on my life load. It is worth.
Reply:You don't have to be "good enough" to start learning martial arts. You might be able to pick up the techniques easily, or you might totally stink. But if you stick to it and work hard, you'll eventually get good .

It CAN be a little frustrating at first(depending on the martial art...I have a much harder time learning Shaolin Kung-Fu than I had learning karate, because the Kung-Fu forms are more complicated...), but once you get the hang of it, it does start to be fun.
Reply:Don't worry about not being good enough its not as if theyre going to ask u to fight a blackbelt. You will be with other pple of your belt. If your worried about not being strong enough theres lost of martial arts that dont need lots of force like aikido and jui jitsu. Its fun and it gives you something to do and it keeps you healthy.
Reply:Yes
Reply:research some schools in your area, a few styles that interest you, sign up and try it out. there is no "good enough" as everyone is a beginner at some point. maybe the martial arts could teach you some confidence.
Reply:of course. i take kung fu, and it has really helped me become stronger, and more flexible. plus, i didn't get sick as much (i used to get strap throat every january). Another good thing is that i had alot of fun and met alot of new people, especialy at competitions. Besides, you never know until you try. ;)
Reply:I started taking Kung Fu because I wanted to learn self defense (have a history that made this necessary for me). What I found is that it helped me develop balance, flexibility, endurance, increased muscle tone and something I didn't predict -- it trained me to focus my mind.
Reply:Oh come on Jmac we all know ya just wanna learn so that one day you can kick the living dog **** outta some prick whose crossed yer path!
Reply:Just try it dude!

The martial arts are for EVERYONE. You may enjoy yourself much more than you anticipate, and if you don't, nothing lost, just leave and find something else to occupy your time.

My only suggestion would be to give it six months before you make your decision. Give it a real chance, as it can take some time for people to get comfortable and settle in.

Good luck!
