Can you teach yourself styles of martial arts?

Like if you wanna learn a style of martial arts and you read books, watch movies and practice your moves that you have learned could you do that learn martial arts that way.

Can you teach yourself styles of martial arts?
The problem is that books and videos are only good for refference material to those who've already learned the basic techniques of the discipline(s) they are studying.

it's only good for helping the individual that reads or watches it to be able to incorporate newer techniques into their own techniques that they've already learned from a formal setting in a class, because that's how the person in the video or the author of the book started out, by studying a discipline in a class and reading or watching other materials and adding the techniques to better themselves and their own techniques.

A book or video can't tell you exactly where the punch should land on an opponent, nor does it tell you where to properly place your ready hand to protect yourself against a possible counter from an opponent, or what you can do to protect yourself from a potential counterattack from an opponent, you can only get that through trial and error in a class setting; if you try doing it on your own with a friend or family member you could wind up hurting yourself or them or both of you.

Only a certified Martial Arts instructor can properly tell you or show you how to do the techniques to begin with, studying reference materials like books or videos only helps give you new ideas to work from and improve yourself for the class.
Reply:No! The Internet specials and books are all lies. They cannot be physical there to correct you even if it's just a little mistake. Movies lie to you. Yeah, you can copy it, but that doesn't mean your doing it the right way. Like if you can do a back tuck and land it, but always bend over 90 degrees, then it's not right. Books are only good if they teach you control, speed, streching, fitness, or power.
Reply:ya i watched this movie about this japense high schooler he trained evry day reading books watching bruce lee and he became a nunchuck master and beat bullies up. forgot the name though it was an import. he practiced and did vrything the book said
Reply:Nope, can't do.
Reply:Not very well. You really need a good instructor.
Reply:how do you know when your doing it wrong?did you think the book was going to see you and say"arso wittle asshopper that is wlong go forth(not fifth)and get the burning pot and hold it to your stomach in 6 months when your 2nd degree burns heal up you'll know everything"?

find somewhere to train.or" look for david carridiene?wittle asshopper".
Reply:Pay the money.. go to a class.... You really think you can do martial arts after reading a book... (I wouldn't risk putting it to the test)... would you hop in a plane if the pilot had only just read a book in learning how to fly one??? or would rather a pilot who had gone to a school of areonotics?
Reply:yes / then take a class to get better
Reply:yes you can, don't listen to those others, i toght myself vary reliable martial atrs drills that saved my (but) on a number of ocasians, and think about it, the person who invented martial arts was self taught and he had to be good for martial arts to be so popular, so yes you can.
Reply:u can learn martial arts that way but when u actually go 2 class with an instructer. u get a true meaning of the forms and techniques.
Reply:You're not going to learn a method well that way without a sound foundation already in place.

At the most basic level, learning a martial art is about getting in touch with your center of gravity, developing balance (both physically and psychologically), and learning how to apply the tools available in the most effective manner.

Learning a few fancy techniques from a book or a video is possible, but it's just learning tricks. You're not gaining the root from which true knowledge and skill comes from.
