Martial arts/ when to enroll my son in training.?

My son is only 2 years old now . But I am thinking in the future when he grows up to enroll him in martial arts training. I'm thinking karate or something of this sort. What is the best age to start for him.? What kind of martial atrs style is preferable and why? I can see a lot of benefits of such training for a boy, but Is there any negative sides of it that I should keep in mind?

Thank you!

Martial arts/ when to enroll my son in training.?
I teach Karate. Both of my sons have trained under me. I tried them both out at the age of 5 and found that one was mature enough to do it, the other had to wait until he was 6.

Any school that tells you to start your child off at 3-4 is just taking your money. Kids don't have the attention span of a knat at that age.

My suggestion is to wait until he's 5, see if he has an interest in it, take him to a couple of schools and let him watch a kids class. Most good schools will give him a free class to try. Find the one he enjoys the most and go for it.
Reply:I am a martial arts instructor and the best thing to do is start early. He could benifit from it so much. Enroll him wen he is about 4 years old. I do Tang Soo Do, but Tae Kwon Do is also good. I have been doing it since I was 7 and I am 19 now and still going strong.
Reply:Karate or TKD (tae Kwon Do) are probably the best to start with for 4 yr olds, or a derivative (Kempo/ Tang So Do as the other poster mentioned). The reason is these are typically easier to learn than others and lend to learning other styles at an older age. That said, go to a good school DO NOT go to a black belt factory (called a McDojo).

These often charge more than they should (over $100/person) have limited classes (say 3 per week for older students at 45 min a class).

If you have more questions, please let me know.
Reply:OK from experience start him 2 years into puberty maybe like 12,13,14. Then he will realize that he can use power in his technique, and more developed body that he doesnt need to change to as much. At 5 or 6 he will need to get used to fighting when he is like 14,15, and will be much worse. Its hard to explain but thats what scientist claim, just like the real story i found in time magazine about a dad and his 2 sons. He wanted them to play basketball because he loved basketball, but didnt start them till they were teens because they dont need to adjust to a jump shot. Both of them made the NBA i forgot who they are, they dont play anymore. But anyways instead of a hard change in all your techniques from 6 to 14,15. Just start him later. Lets say punching straight, ok fine thats not a big deal, but wrestling on the ground and kicking, elbows and other punches he will need to change technique, very difficult because of body memory. so start him later like 12,13,14

ok now martial art decision, all of them will give discipline, ill list some probable types,

Tae Kwon Doe or TKD is fine if u want him for sport, not so much self defense more sporty thing.

Karate is half sport half self defense. make sure u find a good place if you want to do this, (not american)

Wrestling in school, it has it and is also sport and self defense. My friend and i street fight and he is a great wrestler lol.

If u he is starting that young i recomend these 3 because they are less difficult and require less discipline. Finding the best place and instructor and instruction is key! U want it to be strict. trust me.

Ok i hope this helps
Reply:yes at 4 is not a bad age for your child to learn martial arts but keep in mind that once he learns to fight he might bring up some trouble in school...brazilian jiu-jitsu is good for him becuase as kids they like to roll around the floor all the time like cubs playing around with there brothers and sisters... i am a 16 year brazilian jiu-jistu veteran..i started learning different martial arts as a kid i didnt like any of them, karate free style...karate-do and tae-kwondo until i discovered the benefit and the fun of BJJ...good luck.
Reply:for starters

i recommend from my experience:

start at the age of 5 to 6.

give him a kid class, great for socializing, "life rules", discipline, and it is easy for the kid compared to a regular class

martial arts: karate, tae kown do

karate, uses fist (they do kicks but more of fist combat)

tae kwon do uses more kicks %26lt;good cardio
Reply:I started Tae Kwon Do since K2 (6 yrs old) and stopped when I was in Pri 4 (10 yrs old - I got my Junior Black belt by then) as I have to concentrate on studies. I returned back to the sport when I was 15 and got a knee injury during a tournament when I was 16. Went for one last tournament when I was 18 and the knee injury was quite bad. Stopped and picked up golf since then.

Tae Kwon Do is good because it uses the legs most 90% of the time. It's a beautiful martial art especially for those who have long legs. When in real fighting, the legs help to reduce the distance between you and your opponent. You can kick him at a distance which he can't punch or grab you. The muscles of the legs are more powerful as well and thus, can deliver more impact and take down the aggressor with 1 shot.

However, once in close combat, Tae Kwon Do is quite powerless as we are not very well trained in using our fists and wrestling.

Would recommend Akido (100% self defence). It is a gently martial art that focus on defence. Good for all situations and in all distances. Very good for ladies. Guys may find it boring or not fast paced enough like other martial arts. However, Akido is very useful.

Tae Kwon Do and Karate are more aggressive martial arts. One has to learn how to control his power and knowlegde. He is likely to become hot tempered when he finally realised how effective these martial arts are. Good guidance and teaching is crucial to lead your child in the right path.

In conclusion, would advise you to look for a good coach, guide your child's mental development as well and train safely (don't get injured).
Reply:yes I would wait till he gets a little bit older and get him in martial arts training when he is 7 years old but that would be fun
Reply:Inroll him in jiu-jitsu
Reply:enrol him in muay thai. take out anyone with a few hits. plus be in tremendous physical shape.
