Karate vs other martial arts?

i want to lean karate and i would like to know what advantages and disadvantages to other martial arts. seeming i get into fights sometimes and some other people know martial arts and self defense i want to know how karate could apply to being a handy self defense.

Karate vs other martial arts?
If you are true to your convictions, believe in your art, and practice practice practice, the art you choose doesn't matter.

Karate is just as good as Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Kung Fu, Kali, BJJ, and anything else you can think of. You must fight with your art and not allow your opponent to make you fight with his.

As I have said in the past, judge the practitioner not the art.
Reply:Karate is good for reflexes and learning some moves, but a lot of them are not ever going to be used because its impossible to catch somebodies hand in mid air, but it helps you learn the basics and can make you think.

I would say to take wrestling, judo or boxing. Or mix it. Then move on to moves from martial arts. But get a good wrestling back-round before anything. Learn how to stay on top or learn how to never be tooken down.
Reply:karate is not about fancy Jet Li style moves in mid air, it helps the fighter to be quick and think quick too. I would recommend it, but if you want more urban fighting, like self defence and things then I would go for kick boxing.
Reply:Each martial arts have their own advantages and disadvantages to them. I would strongly suggest not learning more then one style because it can slow down your abilities to think like what technique are you going to use at that point i time. Each martial art is used as self defense and or as a sport and all being effective in all ways but some are more effective then others. I saw a show counting down the most effective martial arts with muay thai kickboxing ranking #1. When it comes down to it no matter what martial art it is you need to learn it, know it, speed, power, and think fast. It all comes down to the skill set the person has of it.
Reply:i would say it is the gateway discipline. (you know like gateway drug but....nevermind) if i were you i would consider learning a grappling discipline as well as a striking. best grappling IMO is bjj and striking, that miutai crap, i cant spell it but yeah, two is better than one.
Reply:You should learn Progressive System of Martial Arts - it is all in one. This way you do not limit your abilities and your self-defense is superior!
Reply:Tae kwon do is considered to be one of the best self defense martial art because of breathing and the exercises you do. Depending on who you learn karate from it is still a very well recognised form of self defense. However it depends on whether you are practicing non contact sparring (absolute bull) or if your doing the kind with the body gear. If you dont want to do karate do tae kwon do but you dont have to listen to me.

Try not to mix other martial arts together.
Reply:Dekiti Tirsia Siradas is a real self defense martial arts.
Reply:Karate isn't as popular anymore. Why, it's technique is dogmatic and rigid. The strikes are long and wide. Of course if you are extremely skilled, you'll handle yourself against any layperson. However, kung fu, mixed-martial arts, and many other forms make more sense in open competition.
Reply:Great style for stand up, horrible ground defense though in most schools, until you reach blackbelt or higher.
Reply:In Karate, big movements are only used in kata.

It's used to train you mentally(to punch all the way through) and physically. Nobody uses movements used in katas in tournaments though. Even back in the days. In most cases, people that knows nothing of Karate usually tries to use the moves used in Kata. Watch K-1 heavy weight division. Top K-1 fighters are using Karate. Andy Hug(K-1 legend), Semmy Schilt(current champion), Nicholas Pettas, Glaube Feitosa, etc.
Reply:First and foremost, a fight is a willing physical clash of two or more egos. You should never choose to fight. A fight happens when someone is not intelligent enough to find a peaceful solution.

Secondly, style doesn't matter.

Find a good school, not a good style. Try all the schools in town. Take free classes. Never sign a contract never pay for rank testing. Ask to see their contact drills. Look for a clean school with respectable people.

The quality and frequency of your training will far outweigh your style.

There is no best art, just best artists.

Good Luck.
