Who here thinks martial arts is useless?

please explain why and for those of you who know martial arts is useful tell stories of how you used martial art in a real fight for defense (detail please =] )

thank you

my fight :

Joey(not real name) tried to push me but i did alternating maces(block punch punch) tries too round house punch me i duck under and do a double leg takedown and held his arms down i said"i dont want to fight you!" i'll let you go if u stop! he gave in and his fiends threatened to jump me and that leads us to now =D

Who here thinks martial arts is useless?
I can tell you how I lost against a martial artist, got into a fight in a back alley at a club, everything was going good, My standup was good and I was kicking the guys ***, then something happoned and we went down, the guy got into top possition and did the ground and pound on me until my faces was red

I later found out he was a wrestler in High School, started training in BJJ now so if we fight again i'd kick his *** because I'd know how to get out of it or protect myself on the ground, back then I didn't know anything, and if you think about it anyone can get into top possition by accident and if you don't know what to do you are f***
Reply:A REAL MARTIAL ARTIST DOESNT BRAG..THEY GO ALONG AND LEARN TO AVOID ...BUT AS DR JIGORO KANO ONCE SAID GREET YOUR ENEMY WHEN HE COMES AND WHEN HE IS READY TO LEAVE SEND HIM ON HIS WAY!!... SENSEI KESTER...AIR CAPITAL JUDO
Reply:I don't think that martial arts is useless. A good martial artist can beat anybody who is not well versed in fighting. Martial arts have been used by the Chinese as part of their military training which lead to the protection of their culture from outside invaders. Martial arts have also been used by people to become icons and multi-millionaires. Martial arts are still studied by the military today even though guns are mostly used in warfare today. Krav Maga, which is an Israeli martial art, is studied by all highly trained security personnel and these personnel are successful in protecting the people who run our world. Sorry for the long post but I feel passionate about martial arts. Its not only a way to protect yourself but it is also a way of finding your self.
Reply:No Martial arts are not useless. I have used Praying Mantis techniques, Wing Chun Techniques, and Villari Kempo techniques against others...I turned out all right...
Reply:I couldn't break bats or break through bricks but now I can. That should explain a lot just how useful martial arts can be. If it's so useless, the military or police academy wouldn't be teaching it.
Reply:Apparently you do, let's clarify something:

Martial arts that train unrealistically (no full resistance sparring, no full contact) are useless in a real fight. Martial arts that train realistically (full contact and full resisting opponents) are very useful in a real fight.

Martial arts that train unrealistically are still helpful in developing conditioning, discipline, and overall good shape.

Nothing is useless, it all depends on how you view things, and what your goal is.

In the past 10 years I've only fought once (outside the dojo and the ring), and it helped me, last year a guy tried to hit a lady friend of mine, I pushed him, he took a swing at me, I took the guy down very easily, and I was hitting him on the floor when we were separated, the guy was an ex-cop, my hand was bruised and his ego hurt, but nobody was seriously injured.

good luck!
Reply:You just need to know how to fight....Not all this martial arts bull ****.

Any martial arts that offers sparring, full resistance training, and striking etc that are practical in real fights..Thats the style you should take.

Not this Karate (except for Kyokushin) Kiai and Akido stuff.
Reply:Frank hit it on the head with the type of training required .

The training where the attacker throws one punch or kick and then stands while you do your super duper round house kicks flying kicks spin kicks or multiple strikes elbows punch etc is totally stupid and useless If this is the kind of training you are getting you will be defeated every time.I dont know the degree of force Frank means when he says full contact but it should be hard enough that you know if it had been with bare knuckles the result would have been fight ending or the beggining of the end for your attacker.I can give you a few instances of my use .ALL were one move affairs .One guy tried to grab me I palmed his groin he sat down suddenly another tried a left hand grab right punch I slapped his left hand away as I stepped in head but to the nose he went down 3rd one I quickly grabbed his left arm turned him and kicked his feet out from under him he landed on his tail bone I walked away .

Dont complicate things take the shortest most direct route and move in and pressure pressure pressure no let up he may think he is the attacker and if you allow that to remain true you will lose he must become the defender as soon as he makes a move .

Action is faster than reaction by taking the attack posistion away from him by closing and acting you force him to react to yourespond to you to fight on your terms not his.
Reply:i think that martial arts is awesome and i only took kick boxing but i am a hugeeeeeeee ufc fan i love watching all these insanly awesome moves that i wishhh i knew how to do and i bet u if i knew how to do any of those moves id be kicking eveyones azS!
Reply:Ur saying marital arts is useless because the other dudes threatened to beat u up??? U need to word your questions better. Marital Arts is not about beating someone into submission. Its about standing your ground when times are bad. ANd you did just that. So im not sure what ur asking here.
Reply:martial arts teach self confidence, a art, a way of life, and teaches you how to kick ***. My first fight was this dude got pissed at me cause i ****** his girlfriend he tried to punch but i moved outta the way pushed his arm and caught him with a ridge hand across the neck then he got up then i did a spear hand to his sulerplexis then i stomped him into the grown. my 2nd fight was with this dude at school who wanted to fight me so i said **** you wait till after school so he came at me then i did a side kick to his stomach then he didn't feel like fighting. my third fight was at Denny's restaurant and some drunk dude was being a prick reaching at my plate and talking **** about my friend being a Musslim so i unscrewed the pepper shaker put some in my hand then i threw it in his eyes kick to the groin then i put him in a armbar then the police came and i got community service. my fourth fight was against this dude at school i stole some of his money then i turned my back to him next thing i noticed that he threw me against the grown and he was sitting on my knee so i put him on the half guard then i did kimura and broke his arm. my last fight was at thanksgiving dinner when my uncle called my mom whore so i did the pepper thing to his eyes and punched him in the ribs with sald shaker.
Reply:I think Martial Arts are overrated. Think about it. I used to practice Martial Art myself and in order to be proficient, you need years of practice, not months or weeks. Nowaday people are too busy make a living to spend alot of money and time for years. Finally, how often do you use it? After years of practice, some never use it at all...
Reply:Martial arts are useless to those who do not have the mental, physical and spiritual strength, AND patience, to challenge themselves, to a one on one, in a discipline that can carry them through many journeys, trials and tribulations.

They will never discover the depth of their minds and capabilities.

They will tell people "it can't be done"... the whole time standing in the way of their own progress.

They accept their own experience as law and deny the positive experiences of others. (Heck! I do this myself with the Bruce Lee and Ninja questions asked on here.)

But no one can deny me my experiences as they have been true. My training carried me through trials and tribulations that would have put the average person in the grave with a self-inflicted wound.

Maybe I am weak. Had I not studied my art, and had the understanding in it, I would not be here having my Bruce Lee/Ninja fun.

Not every MA story has to be chock-full of kicking and punches. That is an incidental result of proper MA training. The mental, physical and spiritual strength is the highest gain. The thing you are not consciously aiming for, but hit BULLSEYE!
Reply:would you rather that his strikes had landed and his friends laughed at you rather then the way it played out?

you did the right thing by letting him up, some of us may not have been so leinient on an adversary..good job
Reply:well it's only useless if you suck at it...
Reply:I had to fight a couple towel heads because my weapon jammed,I fortunately am an expert in Martial arts and one hell of a street fighter.I am here they are with all their virgins and Allah. You fought a want to be Not everyone can fight I don't care if they hold a 6th degree black belt that only means they know the forms and terminology to pass the test for promotion.
Reply:You already know the answer.

Your question is not about martial arts, it is about fighting.

And, you know that fighting is wrong, but you were in a situation where you were either forced, invited, or decided to fight.

Only you know which one of those is true.

If it was the first, then you were cornered and attacked, and used a minimal arsenal of what you have been taught to protect yourself. Now you feel badly about what happened, and are facing some backlash. If there is a group of his friends on your trail, get some help right away. If you are a kid, share the load with some adults you trust about the incident (i.e. parents, principal, teacher, school liaison officer).

If you are not a kid, seek other means of support, and keep your eyes open,

If the second or third scenario is true, then you may wish to honestly re-evaluate your training or your reaction to confrontation.

Specifically, ask yourself what you could have done to avoid the fight.

The best martial artists hold the saying: "run with pride". Avoiding confrontation and diffusing aggression is always the best course, as you already know.

Fights are never won, because there is nothing to win outside the ring. There is a lot to lose. For adults, there is litigation and jail. For underage, there is school suspension and relocation. For both, there is the problem of reprisal if you "win".

Self defense trainers have it right. They mainly teach how to avoid trouble, and offer a few proven techniques.

Martial arts are fun, good self discipline, and have practical application in the real world of police, security and military (although all these will use every weapon they have, flashlight, taser, stick, etc., before using hand to hand as the absolute last resort).

Despite my own training being primarily in striking, I have always admired Judo and wrestling of all the martial arts, as these two can be applied in a real (and rare) "no escape possible" self defense without hurting an opponent very much.

Good luck.
Reply:martial is really useful...

Im a street punk,so as you know in singapore street punks have a war with a gangster group in singapore.so while I was waiting for my friend, these 4 gangsters came to me,he ask,"U're a punk?" and they laugh... i controlled my anger, and then one of them started slapping me,then that was the time i coud not control my anger,I used my muay thai moves to them.I hit all of them to the ground and then I was so angry to the leader of the four gangsters,I did a knee strike to the head and slam the head to the brick wall...
Reply:Have you every studies martial arts? I am a female security guard for a large hospital. Most that I have to physically deal with are much larger than I am. We get crazy, drunk and drug addicts. Several times I have had to take one of these down to be restrained. I have studies martial arts for 34 years. Hold Blk Blt in 7 styles and a member of the Blk Blt Hall of fame. My male counter parts look to me for guideances and never treat me as a female but one of the guys. {A great compliment} I have their respect of which was earned by my ability. They know I want shy away from a fight and will always protect their back. Anything else you want to know?
