Martial Arts suggestions?

Looking into Martial Arts..mostly for my son, but maybe for me as well. How do the diffrent martial arts compare against each other...is there a dominant style. Seems like locks and throws would be the most effective...but I really have no idea.

Martial Arts suggestions?
I'm no expert.

Karate has more of an art and a grace to it; not purely combat survival. But it certainly has its share of self-defense. And is perhaps the most mainstream of them.

Judo focuses on flips, holds, grapples, and mainly shifting your weight in ways to achieve better balance, knocking your opponent off his.

Tae Kwon Do -- the Korean martial art--doesn't have a lot of moves, and they are not particularly "flashy" but the moves it has are very effective for self defense.

Krav Maja is an Israeli Self-Defense class that focuses on taking down your assailant quickly while minimizing danger to yourself. Involves a lot of fitness exercises -- hitting bags and so forth to stay in shape. Also very practical.

Don't know much about the others...
Reply:You should check out Krav Maga, its a practical and effective defensive fighting style, with emphasis on defending against knives and guns
Reply:if its mostly for your son, i think you want something that focus' more on discipline than on the actual fighting. I would say tae kwan do. That style use mostly kicks and punches as opposed to chops grabs and throws.
Reply:If you want to focus on locks and throws, judo's a good choice.
Reply:Depends on what you want. If you want self offense, you should look into Karate. If you want self defense, look into Kung Fu. If bone crunching is your thing, try Akido. If style is what you are looking for Capoeira is right up your alley.

Tekken Series is a video game that specialize in Martial Arts. Play with your son and you'll find what you like.

Good Luck!
Reply:Find an instructor that is good with teaching kids... Forget about what style... watch the kids class.... is it organized? are the kids being taught, or is it a daycare? Way too many Martial Arts schools are just making money off of parents by filling the school with kids, and not giving them anything for the money they are spending... How old is your son? That would affect what style of training you would want him in.... please dont go to a school that gives 6 year olds a black belt.. i know its "cute" but really it makes a mockery of Martial Arts and the training required.... your son will learn proper goal setting if you choose a style with a belt system that has a good instructor... but with a bad one.. he will learn.. I dont have to work hard.. they will give me my black belt anyway.... and all the good you wanted your child to get from the training and money you spend is wasted..... good luck man... be very picky about where you take your child
Reply:actually taekwondo does have a lot of moves, and it does have quite a few flashy moves. in fact it has some of the most flashy moves, such as the 540 wheel kick. However, there are also a lot of effective moves in it, and depending on the teacher it can teach you a lot about self-discipline, self-control, focus, respect, integrity, and indomitable spirit. tae kwon do is also good for kids, and is loads of fun. although it depends on what you're looking for. many tae kwon do schools don't focus on the self-defense side much. instead often they focus on the flashy, gymnastic-esq side of it. although it isn't useless for self-defense, either. Most importantly it gives a sense of confidence, so ironically, the people who learn martial arts actually get into fights the least!
Reply:I recommend judo! Great sport, good self defense, and it will get you into the best shape of your life.

Martial Arts Videos?

Does anybody know where some hardcore martial arts videos are? I'm not talking about instructional videos or that wushu crap thats fake I'm talking about like two masters of the same style or a different style in a REAL fight going head to head full on as hard as possible trying to beat the crap out of each other. I want to see what you can really do with martial arts, not like you see in the movies, and not on instructional videos where everything is slowed down. I've looked on youtube and havnt been able to find anything so if you could post up links or tell me what to type in the search bar that would be great. thanks.

Martial Arts Videos?
1) Martial arts generally isn't about "trying to beat the crap out of someone".

2) Most martial arts masters have nothing to prove, so they don't go around fighting.

3) In some cases, fighting like this is forbidden by rules of the martial art.

4) If two real martial arts masters came down to an earnest fight, one would probably end up seriously crippled or dead.

5) A claim that a martial art is crap can probably be disproven. If you think Wushu (not the sport) is fake, pick a fight with Jet Li.
Reply:Vale Tudo matches seem closest to what your looking for. Its like UFC without the Rule Gloves %26amp; Referee stopages.

Look up Vale Tudo should find some good stuff.
Reply:you tube- www.youtube.com
Reply:Finally, someone who makes sense... thanks Dinobot!

Martial arts kicks (for example, flying side kick)?

1. what's one of the most difficult martial arts kicks there is?

2. what's one of your favorite (or favorite) martial arts kick?

3. what's one of the most difficult combination of kicks there is?

4. what's one of your favorite (or favorite) combination of kicks?

Martial arts kicks (for example, flying side kick)?
Running Jumping spinning back kick and to make it a combo at into a crescent with the other leg of your opponent for leverage. very hard to do.

Or a three way combo kick in the air one to fact and quick to right and then to left with same leg before you ever hit the ground. Very hard to do!

I prefer more simpler kicks though like side kicks and crescent kicks and axe kicks.
Reply:butterfly kick
Reply:answer to all 4

quadripedal roundhouse

or somehting like that

its on youtube

this guy does 2 roundhouses in a row and breaks 3 boards in one jump

flippin amazing
Reply:jumping back kick
Reply:1. Im not sure - but the hardest one for me is the jump and back kickin mid air

2. My favorite? thats gotta be tornado kick

3. difficult? idk

4. favorite is stepping roundhouse kick, back kick, 2 roundhouses, a fake, and push kick = fatality

im 13 and i go to taekwondo
Reply:I think the most difficult is when you twist you start kicking then it'll land in a spilt........

death kick

my fav is death kick.
Reply:1. Probably either the butterfly kick or the jumping spinning hook kick.

2. Side kick. Powerful. Quick. Effective.

3. The one I'm doing now for my junior blackbelt. Jump side kick, jump spinning hook kick, low to high roundhouse.

4. Low roundhouse kick to the knees to high side kick to the gut to jumping reverse side kick to the sternum. Make sure you have a lot of room to kick.
Reply:my fav kick when i was 17 and in tkd (for demonstration purposes only) was a running jumping flying reverse kick, jumping off of my left leg, and reverse kicking with my left leg, and in the opposite direction a flying front kick at the same time... I could only manage one board with each kick, but it looked cool... but my fav kicks to use in hard sparring are the basics, and i like to use combinations of punches then kicks... as it has a greater chance of landing without me being caught with my guard down... there are all types of fun kicking combinations you can "play" with if you are sparring feet only though.... but much like boxing it all has to bet set up properly, to make your opponent think he knows what is coming so you can "feint" and deliver something else... good luck
Reply:Hi there

Its a very difficult question to answer considering all styles are different in their approach and application.

If you want a realistic answer try doing them in a confined space when you've had one drink too many.

Answers to questions 1 to 4 is simply the one that works.

Best wishes

idai
Reply:1. For me butterfly kick was easy to learn :] I'm having a lot of trouble with the side kick though. Perfecting technique takes a long time 0.o

2. Axe kick/outward-downward kick. feels so POWERFUL

3. probably XMA kicks. 540's to 720's to corkscrew or whatever crazy things those crazy people come up with.

4. don't have one yet :\

Reply:1. The most difficult kick for people to become EFFECTIVE with are crescent kicks. (as far as difficult = complicated: if it takes too long to apply, I absolutely don't use it or teach it)

2. Favorite: rear leg low roundhouse to the knee/leg off of a simple jab-cross. (devastating because it usually lands unchecked since my opponent has to worry about the hand combo)

3. N/A

4. My favorite leg combo is snapping a roundhouse low as a feint and then quickly rechambering and changing levels to kick head high. (a lot of people will drop their hands to "help" block the fake low kick)
Reply:My favorite the lowly front kick fast powerful easy to time can be used in any circumstance to any target hard to get inside of or around. The problem most people have with it is timing or it's not dramatic enough .I have lifted 200 pound opponents off the floor with it .

Martial Arts are for wusses who were bullied in school!?

Since when have you ever seen anyone on the street strike one of the gay poses you see looking into the window of a Martial Arts class? Either you kick *** or you don't. If you do you can learn to refine your fighting style through restraining moves and practicing kicks etc but if your some nerdy white office worker afraid of being mugged and now feel all confident you can whip *** if needed let's see it. The only you could hope to accomplish is catching an attacker of guard for second and then your butt better run. For the most part Martial Arts are ballet for girlie men!

Martial Arts are for wusses who were bullied in school!?
all I can say is when you are educated come back and ask it again. Until you walk in our shoes you cannot clearly or fairly indicate why people take MA. They join for many reasons, bullying in school is a VERY MINOR reason people join. Check your facts before spewing mis information. I have no problem explaining to someone the benefits of MA but usually to someone who has an appeciation to learn.

I can tell you don't really want to learn but just bash peoples answers that you do not agree with, It is that obvious and I only answered to call you on it. I expect a thumb down from you because that is what you want to do.

REAL MA do not strike poses in a real life situation, only 8 months ago I had a man begging me not to break his arm over a restaurant table because he grabbbed my shoulder from behind hard and squeezed at a restaurant and i did not know him or his intent, he was lucky I gave him the option of it being broken or not. he luckily for his sake opted to back off hence he kept his arm in tact.

There was no stances other than sitting down or poses it was all natural instinct. so again once you have educated yourself on the subject and have some proof and evidence of this wild claims of absurdity keep studying until you do! then maybe you will understand.

for the most part UNEDUCATED MEN are the type to call others wussies because they are too insecure and have to draw attention away from their deficiency and point at what they perceive or often make up for another to draw attention away from their uneducated beings.

so I know that went over your head but the other MA in here understood me and that is all that matters.

I have not been in high school for more than 2x the years it takes to complete it all and i will tell you NO ONE CARES about what happens to HS and such...you are all still kids in our eyes and have much maturing still to do and you just proved it!

I was also a former member of the USA NATIONAL MARTIAL ARTS TEAM. Ever watch Best of the Best??? I fought like they did full contact and it was hardly for wusses but i suppose if you play football and drink beer and get over weight and abuse your wife and family that makes you a man right? I can see your future already.

only bullies are wusses because they are insecure period as you appear to be or why say what you did unless you are feeling insecure when you wrote it. wow your so easy to explain but then again not much info to put together the life of some one under 18 they just have not lived long enough to make any impact yet and be noticed, if thats what your doing trying to be noticed all you did was look more a fool for it, not a man.

Real men do not bash one another other than in the ring or to protect their lives or loved ones lives. THat is hardly a wussy thing to want to be able to do. Cant wait to see how your football training is gonna save you then!!
Reply:If you've got your fighting skills down pat anyways, then just don't take martial arts.
Reply:I have a 9-3 mauy thai record. I have a 3 yr grappling back ground. I've bounced in bars for the past 2 yrs. I'm 6'1", 180lbs. I belive some martial arts are usefull. What's your question?
Reply:Not true. I thought it was a waste of time at first. But my cousin has been training for years and I'm amazed at how well he can fight. The poses you see are essential for quick movements, and proper techniques allow for stronger defenses/attacks.
Reply:Maybe your one of those ballet girlie men.
Reply:Spoken like a true ignoramus who has never taken a class in their life.
Reply:I have always considered Martial Arts as a way to "level the playing field'.

At 5'6" and 134 lbs. I am a smaller/lighter guy.

Bullies and jerks tend to be larger guys that pick smaller guys to beat up.

I can't say that I have always come out on top when up against 6' 270lb opponents but I have held my own,and had a couple back off when they could see I knew how to defend myself.

My view is that Martial Arts are great for smaller/lighter people who need some skills to help level the playing field when they become the target of a mugger, rapist or weirdo
Reply:Im only asuming your a man sense your calling everyone a girlie man......what kind of man is named Sarah lololol

::::::::::::EDIT::::::::::::::::

OK but seriously take some muay Thai classes and then see how much of a better fighter u will become (muay thai is a good style for "fighters")
Reply:i know how you feel,

hope you dont run into a pro though.

sounds like you might be good at martial arts, maybe you should go by a school and share ideas with them.
Reply:Thanks for the two points.
Reply:your definition of martial arts is way off. All fighting styles are a martial art. Thats the definition. I reccommend you watch some MMA(mixed martial arts) and then say u could kick anyone who does martial arts' *** because technically if u have had any unarmed combat training, you are practicing a martial art. I do agree that stances are stupid for the nerdy white guys who weight 90 pounds and obviously don't have any real strength/agility but skill is important and i guarentee you that someone with some jiujitsu and boxing could totally kick your *** even if they weighed 3/4 of your weight. I've seen it before.

I will say that karate alone will not train you for a real fight. I've seen countless karate blackbelts lose to someone with no training whatsoever. The thing is that karate has been way too commercialized. It will slightly improve your striking but there are many other martial arts that are better for street fighting.

you probably suck at fighting and any one with training at all who was your size could kick your ***, as you would say.
Reply:depending on how you train martial arts can greatly help your fighting skills: many military forces teaches martial arts or aspects of several martial arts in their training such as krav maga

pro fighters learn martial arts to compete im pretty sure a pro boxer, thai boxer, mma fighter etc... wouldnt be considered a "girlie man"

but its true that SOME martial arts are mainly fitness and lack realistic training. as long as you recieve practical training against a resisting opponent simulating a real fight as closely as possible you are going to be able to defend yourself pretty well on the streets against the average joe
Reply:i would like you try to say that to any ufc fighter they will knock you out so fast you would think you got raped by a man
Reply:I agree to an extent, I am a boxer which some people consider a martial art but I don't but that is beside the point. I have seen alot of pretenders who think they are Bruce Lee and have got their *** whiped by guys from my gym. I think the ultimate self defence is boxing but that is my own bias oponion. People do martial arts for a number of reasons; spiritual, fitness, not just so they can take somone out. Martial arts are used by the police and military all round the world so there must be somthing to it. You obviously know nothing about martial arts or you would not be making such a stupid statement so you better get back into bed and turn the lights off, I think I can hear your moma coming up the stairs.

ps. I would like to see how you fear against an experienced Jujitsu practitioner.
Reply:Martial Arts is for those who want to take it....... I say things before I think about saying anything and I use to get my *** kicked so I took martial arts, now I have more stronger punches
Reply:Alot of the time people DO take up martial art because they get bullied and its meant to turn you into a stronger person, however sometimes it makes you worse
Reply:To be honest, I was never bullied in school. I wasn't the popular type, either, but definitely not a target of bullies. The "poses" you see aren't for use on the street, so that's why you don't see them. And, if all it takes is to catch an attaker off guard so you can get away, that's what martial arts training is for!
Reply:hey i guess you never saw the ufc then bro?? your right most martail arts are useless. taekwondo might be good for kicks but if someone grabs you your dead meat. kung fu is a joke as is tai chi and alot of others! however this is not the case for every martail art! not all arts include a 120lb man in a white suite saying high--yaaaaaaaa! if ya no what i mean! have you ever heard of jujitsu? jujitsu teaches you how to fight on the ground how to break peoples arms legs and how to choke people out. how to put people to sleep. boxing and kickboxing loose 99.9% of the time against brazilian jujitsu. wrestling (as in high school wrestling not gay tna and wwe) is also very good for fighting.

i was a boxer at the age of 13 just to teach me dicipline. i boxed for 3 years and had a record of 16-2-4 and but to me i knew boxing was boring and getting punched in the head wasnt all that much fun you know. i took up muay thai but i found that after two years it was just like boxing you get hit too ******* much and you dont need it. now for two years i have been doing jujitsu and altho it involves wrestling with other men as long as you are comfortable with your sexualtiy then its grand! as for 100lb men beating 200lb men that doesnt happen unles the 100lb man is a little monkey and has incredible jujitsu.

i get what your saying about people being bullied in school but i dont necessarily agree! while some people in martial arts have been bullied it only applies to some! but everybody was picked on at some time! so what! i mean alot of todays serious criminals were sexual abuse victoms so we can be happy at least all those bullied people dont turn to crime.

as for nerdy office worker afraid of being mugged they too often are too stupid to know what the real definsive martial arts are! kung fu wont stop you being whupped!

thats just how its is. nobody can pull that crap off on the street. if you want to know about jujistu go watch spike tv.

and i know it looks gay but if you an attacker thing this is gay then hey thats fine but you can laugh while you sleep. i know like it sounds like im talking crap but its proven that jujistu beats street fighters and boxers every time.

check it out! oh and nerds should check it out too cause kung fu karate and taekwondo wont do crap for you
Reply:Well Sarah A, you are either an ignorant tw*t, a pretty dumb dildo of sorts (maybe one of those bullies), or you are just trying to take the p*ss.

If later is the case then congratulations, you have done well judging by the number of answers.

Other than that I'm sure there are plenty of girlie men out there ready to take your challenge...
Reply:Many were. Me, I'm a pacifist.
Reply:I can see you know very little about martial arts other than what you have watched on television or seen in the movies. You must also believe that "Smokey and the Bandit" and the "Adams Family" are real also and you should make someone a great girlfriend or wife someday-NOT!

Whats your real problem-did your martial arts boyfriend break up with you for one of his classmates or something?
Reply:You have a point. Unfortunately, some unfortunate souls end up with a school who's out to make money. They talk a good game, instill you with confidence, never get you real sparring time or tournament competition, then they get their ***** kicked because they can't take a punch. Obviously, you've been fighting those guys.
Reply:is educating yourself to combat. the average person on the street has no idea what hes doing and is even laughable most of the time. While some may be decent fighters with out martial training they have no idea what they would be capable of if they learned to focus their power. in reference to the smaller vs. bigger argument. look at the first ufc and tell me who dominated. the average size guy usually beat the bigger stronger guy. just look up royce gracie.
Reply:Martial Arts is for wusses but starting fights on Yahoo Answers makes you SO cool.
Reply:Your question is WHAT, exactly?

I've been training in TKD for a while now, I was never bullied in school, I was pretty much left alone.

Why do you hate the martial arts anyway. Are you a troll?
Reply:i didnt read the whole thing because ur an idiot martial arts teaches self discipline and you dont see it on the streets because it teaches you to use it constructivley and defensively dumbass

******* who re
Reply:if you pull a pose you are a dikhead for sure.

but Sarah A, is A for Anus?
Reply:straight up. there's allot of little wanna bees out there that want to be the next Bruce lee or some ****. But I box and train intensively, its not just a career its a life style, and its considered a martial art too so are you callin me a woosie ballet girlie man cause I'd rip out your throat and strangle you with it... : )

Recommended Martial Arts for excercise and general fitness?

I've been doing the same routine for some time (shooting hoops a few days a week) to stay healthy and I've become a little bored and uninspired, and as a result I've skipped my "play nights" to sit around and do nothing. 10lbs later I've decided to change things up and thought that some sort of martial arts might do the trick. I figure being in a class enviroment would help motivate me, get me back into shape and maybe even have a little fun. Im not looking to be competitive (even though i do have a mean competitive streak so who knows), or to really learn about kickin butt, but simply as a fitness tool.

Is there a martial art that fits these requirements? Would full contact sports like Boxing, Muy Thai or that-intense-Israeli- self-defense - is-called be best? or would something a little more "art" based like Shaolin Kung Fu or Aikido be more suitable? Or even go something more weapons based like Kendo or Fencing?

Any advice is appreciated.

Recommended Martial Arts for excercise and general fitness?
Muay Thai, no, with traditional Muay Thai you are looking at doing the ceremonies and actual practices that are traditional in their culture. Kickboxing would be more beneficial in my opinion because it incorporates your whole body, and fitness kickboxing does even more so. Fitness kickboxing is really for people who wish to loose weight, get real lean and have some fun while doing it. I know it just sounded like a commercial, but it does work wonders.

Actual kickboxing mainly teaches, while the fitness version is just like go in and do it so you burn some fat. I wouldnt suggest boxing just because anywhere you go really everyone will be there to compete. Anyone studying boxing is doing it for competition, not playing around.

If you are interested in a more art type of martial art, I would suggest Karate, they have many different types of karate and it is still fun and will make anyone loose weight really. Also they have a lot of competitions out there. Its the friendlier martial art, otherwise go with Tae Kwon Doe, its basically like a mix of kickboxing and karate rolled into one. In my personal opinion anyways.
Reply:Well it's a start, if you want you get into shape. but fighting or competition shape that's a different story, that takes gruelling exercises, discipline, and a strong desire to get better. but general health i would recommend mile runs or jogs, where you go farther gradually, and standard isometrics such as squats, push-ups, and crunches or situps as well if just for general health, if your just gonna d martial arts you won't get much progress, b/c you'll need to more on your own.
Reply:I would reccomend Tae Kwon Do. I have been doing it for 4 years and I am a black belt. It has gotten me in great physical shape and it is not at all boring. It will knock you into shape pretty fast.
Reply:freestyle karate and crosstrain in muay thai.the israeli art called crap maggot is a waste of time it is an overrated sloppy imitation of other freestyle martial arts.
Reply:tae kwon do. i have gotten twenty pounds lighter ever since tae kwon do. since tae kwon do utilizes all parts of your body you will get more exercise from it. just make sure you are dedicated enough to do tae kwon do.
Reply:Taebo, Taekwondo, Boxing, and Kickboxing are all good for general purpose fitness.
Reply:Based on your criteria, I'd suggest Judo. It's both a sport %26amp; a martial art. You'll get lots of exercise and you'll learn some good self-defense. You rarely see fat Judo competitors!

Martial arts exhibitions nothing more than dancing routines and gymnastics?

come on!... have you seen those?

why do they even call them "martial arts" exhibitions?

don't get me wrong, i think they can fight; but those contests are a joke!

what they need it to put some gloves and get on and a ring and fight it out! for christ sake thats what martial arts is all about! self defense!

like mma. not doing flip flops and dance routines! thats a joke to all who really train to fight.

ohh and the combats they have are a joke too!

it seems they are cardio dancers with so much protection as if they where training wild lions! come on!

anybody think like me?

Martial arts exhibitions nothing more than dancing routines and gymnastics?
I have to disagree with Opinionatedkitten. What we are wittnessing is not Martial Arts. It is gymnastics with kicks and punches thrown about. Next time really watch the small stuff. You will see on half the moves they have their eyes closed, which is a beginers mistake. Also watch for the attitudes. If you have ever seen them at tournements you know what I am saying. I would also really love to see them do one of the fancy flipping kicks in a crowded resteraunt or on a slippery sidewalk.

How do you do extreme martial arts weapons? Get a featherweight weapon that wouldn't harm a girl scout, flail about with it in the most unrealistic manner possible, while keeping your eyes closed and making a face like you are constipated, and yelling like a bee is in your gi pants. Sorry but it is true.

If that is what they want to do it is fine. They are very showy, in excellent shape, and do train what they do hard, I just think it shouldn't be called Martial Arts,. How about Martial Gymnastics?
Reply:right you are ..
Reply:Any martial artist would agree with you on this, but the general population do not study martial arts and only really wish to see flashy, flux, and beautiful 'fighting'.

They want to see flips, and they're the ones who are paying in the end.
Reply:I agree. I am so grateful that my Sensei was a Chicago cop and taught us how to use our skills in a street fight situation! We never went to a single tournament. We neither used high kicks nor 'flair' techniques. It was strictly based on efficiency and often was damaging and possibly fatal to an opponent. If people want to dance they should join a ballet club, if they want to get in shape they should hit the weights and jog/swim or something. If they want to defend themselves then they should learn a martial art. I wasn't taught to blend fighting with dancing or 'kicking my way to perfect abs' and am thankful that I learned to strictly kick ***!
Reply:They're doing things which would impress the average person.Remember that martial arts movies are why most people get into fighting in the first place. Who doesn't want to try those things?

Once you know what martial arts is all about is when you can finally appreaciate the real matches.
Reply:You don't seem to understand martial arts at all. Martial arts don't exist for your entertainment.

Big Foot's video does support your point though. Whatever he's doing seems geared toward providing entertainment.
Reply:I know what you mean http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJDgWM5-9...
Reply:agreed entirely
Reply:Martial arts exhibition are about displaying the art of martial arts and showing what these people can do in ideal conditions.

I don't know why people like you seem to think everything that is not fighting is completely worthless. If everyone just did nothing but fight, fight, fight, their technique would have improved only slightly since grade school. The time away from fighting is the time you can spend learning. Something I suspect you don't do much of. What? Are you trying to tell me you wake up in the morning and the first thing you do is go down to the ring for a fight, and then you fight all day? There's more to life, and there's more to martial arts as well.

Have a good day.
Reply:I agree with you but I like the flips.
Reply:These events are for armature martial artist. Not everyone can nor do they wish to get the crap beat out of them. This format allows competition and you can go back to your nine to five job and function there.

Do not get me wrong I know what a get down and dirty fight is. Not everyone is in it for the same reasons.

I always tell my students because they can spar well does not mean the can hold their own in a street brawl, however if you can't spar you cant fight well either.

As for the "fancy dance" that brings in the continuing arguments about kata. That is a separate question.
Reply:hahaha so true, im a martial artist lol.

those dance things at exhibitions are just to show off the martial arts they are just patterns to show the style off. it is from along time ago where different styles created forms and stuff to make it fancy so that they can gain more recruits however these forms were done so that rival styles didn't know how use the techniques.

in other words those dances and jumps actually have practical uses hidden within them.

this is true as some martial arts dont actually teach the true use of them anymore. how ever at least mine it does teach u the true more effective and less fancy use of the moves.

yeah i admit those flips and stuff are pretty useless but those armour stuff is due to rules lol stupid ay. lol o well in competitions anyway for me we do full contact sparring no protection no gloves sometimes.
Reply:Yep - all dance routines - but then again - what is a Kata ? Claude Van Dam was a dancer that had never done any martial arts in his life. Says it all really.
Reply:These demos go waaaaaay back to martial arts begginings but the purpose was better understood. It wasn't to amuse or amaze spectators and in fact were rarely done in public. They were about attaining absolute control of the body by pushing the limits of what the student thought possible.

They were never presented as fighting technique and any good instructor will define technique as "this is for demo only and this is for kicking ***"

Neither is fighting in a ring with rules very realistic and one of the main reasons bad *** we spar all the time with contact types still get their *** kicked in real fights.
Reply:Good points....

I have to somewhat agree with you. I've done capoeira and gymnastics. When I was in gymnastics, practically all the moves I learned my gymnastics teacher could teach me. She said almost all of those performing arts moves are the same things she teaches her dance and gymnastics students only difference is for martial arts performance you "flare" out more showing more of the motion, like for kicks, while in gymnastics and dance you tend not to.

This is why back in the day of the original power rangers days(when you actually had to have experience in something) you either needed a background in martial arts, gymnastics, OR dance. I believe the black ranger had background in dance and the blue and pink in gymnastics leaving the red, yellow, and green the only ones with actual martial arts background.

But as far as a "joke". Hey whatever floats you boat, everybody has there own opinion. I personally like both performing and combative competing. Some people might like one or another.

Even if you put on gloves and fight it out there are still controversy within that.

Point fighting vs full contact

Full contact(one style) vs MMA

MMA(with certain rules like the UFC now; no kicking a downed opponent) vs MMA(with different rules like pride: you can kick a downed opponent but no elbows) vs old school UFC(no gloves, weight classes, etc..) vs true no holds barred anything goes street fighting

You are right though martial arts is about fighting actual self defense, it is literally the art of war.

But once again I'll tell you the controversy in the martial arts world. Some people would argue that fighting in the ring still is limited compared real world self defense. You go into the ring yeah you may get beaten up(badly) but you don't expect to get killed, there are refs, doctors, no weapon, it's still a pretty controlled environment. This is why the Spartans boycotted the pankration events at the Olympics because it still had rules; this is why Bruce Lee(was for full contact sparring) but wasn't too in favor of combative sports competition; and the military instructor on the Human Weapon's episode of the Marine Corps Martial Arts said you put me in the ring with Randy Couture he'll beat me; but put us on the streets and I'll kill him.

My opinion is that yeah in ring fighting is still pretty different than real life self defense, but it[MMA] is pretty much as close as you are going to get. And of course the fighting another resisting opponent its going to realistically fine tune your skills. And it's definitely going to better prepare you for real life self defense than flipping around all over the place. But that might be why some people are doing it for the performance, come on you know you watch Jet Li, Jackie Chan, and Tony Jaa movies. :P

I think as long as you don't confuse performing with actual fighting you are good to go.

LOL that just reminded me of that new MMA movie about to come out, Never Back Down.

@25sec into the video that guy tried a backflip like move in an MMA match and the other guy waited for him to land, and laid him out.
Reply:no, most competitions have sections, form/katas(as you say dance), and sparring, what are wrong with katas? u are right, MA is about self defense but you choose a horrible example, MMA isnt self defense its a couple guys using there myriad of MA skills in a ring
Reply:Yeah I agree.

I saw a video of some little asian guy trying to dry hump Brock Lesnar into submission while Brock pounded his head in.

Martial arts is gay.

Martial Arts in the Olympics v.2.0?

What do you think about taking Judo, TKD and other martial arts and combining them into a martial arts category like gymnastics?

It would be organized like a martial arts tournaments with categories like forms, point sparring, grappling, etc. Each country would field a team that would accumulate points from each category and individual as well as team medals would be awarded.

I've been thinking about this for a while, but I'd like to hear from 'the community'. We could start a petition.

Martial Arts in the Olympics v.2.0?
That was the first thing I thought when I heard they were considering putting karate in the Olympics. For all purposes related to awarding points, karate and tae kwon do are the exact same thing; why make them different categories? That's just going to confuse people about the differences between styles.

It would indeed make more sense to have Martial Arts--wrestling, forms, and point sparring.
Reply:don't like it
Reply:They should host a Kumite style tournament in the Olympics. No particular style or form of martial art (just no weapons). Weight classes optional.
Reply:Doesn't interest me at all.
